How a Floor Scrubber Works

A floor scrubber is an incredibly efficient cleaning machine that combines speed with a thorough cleaning process to ensure that the surface is as dirt and stain free as possible. Floor scrubbers usually come in two varieties: walk-behind scrubbers and ride-on scrubbers.

Both scrubbers use the same mechanism for the cleaning process itself, and this article will detail exactly how these machines get surfaces looking so spotless.

When a floor scrubber is being used, it applies a water and detergent mix to the surface, which is then immediately scrubbed by the rotating brushes. These brushes can vary in design, pressure and material, and these factors can be altered depending on the surface that is being cleaned.

A squeegee is attached to the rear of the scrubber, meaning the surface is immediately dried as soon as the brushes have passed over it. This squeegee is supported by a vacuum that also sucks up any excess moisture from the surface.

This prevents any leftover moisture on the surfaces that may cause people to slip and hurt themselves. Auto-scrubbers also have separate dispensing and collection tanks, to avoid the clean water being contaminated with dirty water. Most scrubbers have a protection device fitted to them, to prevent the motor from being damaged by flooding, blockages or electrical faults.

Walk-behind and ride-on floor scrubbers have differing features that have an effect on the way floors are cleaned. Walk-behind floor scrubbers are smaller than their ride-on counterparts, but are still able to clean floors up to 10 times as fast as someone with a mop. Ride-on scrubbers larger than walk-on scrubbers, but with their ability to clean a large area in a short space of time, they are ideal for large buildings such as shopping centres or supermarkets.
