If you have a warehouse that measures 2,000m², but you have racking that reduces usable space by 20%, the area you have to clean is 1,600m².

What is ‘practical area performance’?
Floor scrubber dryers have a ‘practical area performance’ that represents the practical area the machine can cover per hour, with typical usage.

Machine Performance
There are 3 main types of floor scrubber dryer, and each are suited to different environments, and have different stats.
Walk-Behind Floor Scrubber Dryers
- Ideal for: Medium Sites, 2,000 – 5000m²
- Practical Area Performance: 1,200 – 1,800m²/h
- Avg. Cleaning Width: 450 – 600mm
- Avg. Run-Time: 2 – 2.5 Hours
For medium-sized sites a walk-behind machine is ideal, and the most commonly used. If the site layout has multiple rooms or a number of fixed obstacles (shelving, pillars), then a walk-behind machine is most likely to offer the best solution.
Even though walk behind floor scrubber dryers have a lower practical area performance compared to step-on scrubbers, walk-behind scrubbers can provide better cleaning performance across harsher floors and environments.
Ride-On Floor Scrubber Dryers
- Ideal for: Medium & Large Sites, 5,000m² +
- Practical Area Performance: 3,500 – 7,000m²/h
- Avg. Cleaning Width: 800 – 1,200mm
- Avg. Run-Time: 3 – 5 Hours
If the site is more open-plan, then a ride-on scrubber is most likely to be the best solution. Ride-on scrubbers are more efficient, and can provide reliable cleaning results, across any hard floor and environment – allowing you to maximise cleaning productivity for the long term.
Step-On Floor Scrubber Dryers
- Ideal for: Small / Medium Sites, Less than 2,000m²
- Practical Area Performance: 2,000 – 2,200m²/h
- Avg. Cleaning Width: 500 – 800mm
- Avg. Run-Time: 2.5 – 3.5 Hours
For smaller sites, a compact step-on floor scrubber provides the most practical choice. As these machines are easy to manoeuvre, and are very well-suited to environments where space is limited.
Due to step-on floor scrubbers being compact, they can provide ample cleaning across small and medium sites, but may not provide adequate results for harsh environments.
Site Layout & Usage
Alongside your site size and practical area performance, the layout of your facility is equally important when choosing a machine.
Unobstructed spaces are best suited for ride-on machines, where large areas need to be clean quickly, and efficiently.
In sites where the layout isn’t as open or even – e.g. there are narrow aisles, tight corners or fixed equipment – walk-behind scrubbers usually provide a better solution. This is because they can clean with greater control and flexibility, and navigate these tighter areas with ease.
In many cases – where sites have a combination of tighter spaces and open areas – multiple machines can be used to achieve the best results (especially if the site is particularly large, with multiple areas).
Also, you need to consider how you use your site and any specific daily requirements.
For example, high-traffic areas usually require more frequent cleaning. This means it’s even more important to consider the size of the machine.
