What Equipment Do I Need to Clean a Leisure Centre?
Rigorous fitness and exercise classes will inevitably create sweaty bodies and lots of bacteria. It’s important for any functioning leisure centre to maintain healthy hygiene standards with a thorough cleaning routine.
But with many different areas of a leisure centre, all of various shapes and sizes, it can be difficult to know the best approach. In this article, the team at Alpha Power Cleaners take a look at which cleaning equipment is best suited for tackling the different areas of a leisure centre.
Update: If all goes to plan with the UK’s Roadmap, Gyms could open as early as 12th April 2021.
Cleaning the Reception/Entrance
The reception is the first impression customers will have of your leisure centre. If it is dirty, messy or unsanitary, they probably won’t stay for much longer. One of the biggest issues in a reception is the mess. Food is often consumed in these areas, leading to crumbs and other debris left on the floor.
For this reason, it is useful to have a floor sweeper or carpet cleaner. Removing dust, debris and crumbs will leave your reception in a much tidier and welcoming state.
A popular choice for small-medium reception/entrances is the Tennant S7 Walk-Behind Floor Sweeper. This machine is ideal for leisure centre entrances with carpets or hard floors. It’s compact but powerful and easy to maneuver. Most importantly, it’s quiet, meaning you can swiftly sweep the floors without causing any disruption.

Our local Leisure Centre is Loughborough Leisure Centre, complete with a pool, gym, indoor sports court and activities.
Cleaning Hallways
Similarly, to the reception, the hallways are another area where dust, dirt and food particles can quickly accumulate. Many hallways have medium-sized carpeted floors, so a compact carpet cleaner would be useful.
There are many different options to choose from. One recommendation would be the Karcher Puzzi 10/1 Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner. This machine offers powerful cleaning of medium-sized carpets with a spray extraction method that only leaves 9% residual moisture. This is a great way to keep the floor clean and safe when there is heavy footfall in the area.
It is also useful to have a floor scrubber dryer, these machines can be used to clean up wet and dirty floors in one pass – making is easy to clean long hallways, that are a hard surface or tiled. We have a range of walk-behind floor scrubber dryers for smaller areas, and ride-on floor scrubber dryers for larger areas.
Cleaning Toilets
Typically, leisure centre toilets are relatively small, but they can get unhygienic quickly. A small scrubber dryer is perfect for small toilets.
One of many good models would be the Tennant CS16 Micro Walk Behind Floor Scrubber Dryer. Suitable for a range of floor types, this small walk-behind scrubber dryer has a compact design for cleaning hard-to-reach places. Plus, this model features reduced noise levels and increased run time with its Eco-Mode™ setting.
Cleaning Changing Rooms
Leisure centre changing rooms are typically medium-large sized with hard floors.
A great choice would be the Karcher B 60 W Walk Behind Floor Scrubber Dryer. It has a 60-litre tank, perfect for medium sized areas and is suitable for hard floors and tiles. Thanks to its rear squeegee and brush head, the Karcher B has a cleaning path of 850mm, allowing you to clean a wide space in a short amount of time.
Cleaning the Gym
Gyms are breeding grounds for bacteria. Studies show that gym equipment contains more bacteria than toilet seats. A typical set of free weights contain over 300 times more germs than a toilet seat.

Above is the Gym at Loughborough Leisure Centre, taken pre-covid.
For this reason, heavy-duty cleaning is important. So while most gyms are usually small-medium areas, you’ll want equipment that offers powerful cleaning and drying while still remaining compact.
One choice may be the Karcher BR 35/12 C Bp Walk Behind Floor Scrubber Dryer, which is easy to maneuver around cluttered surfaces. The brush is always transverse to the direction of travel, and the suction bar reliably absorbs water in every corner.
